The Heritage and Innovation of Enamelling
Enamelling is an ancient and fascinating craft that originated thousands of years ago in Ancient Egypt and has evolved through generations of craftsmen to become one of the most respected crafts in the watchmaking industry. However, the process of creating an enamel dial is extremely complex and requires a great deal of skill and patience.
The Process of Making a Red Transparent Enamel Dial
- Preparation of the Base Material: Selection of a high-quality metal chassis, usually silver or copper, as they hold the enamel well.
- Adhesion of the Silver Foil: A layer of ultra-thin silver foil is fired onto the surface of the chassis to fuse it with the base, forming a key part of the structure.
- Colouring: A layer of transparent red glaze is applied to the silver foil, which is then fired again. This process is repeated, with coloring and firing, depending on the desired effect.
- Polishing and Checking: Finally, the fired dials are polished to make their surfaces smoother and brighter. Every detail is carefully checked to ensure there are no flaws.
